02) Black Country Museum, Dudley.

I have been trying to fit in a visit to the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley for ages; I finally made it in February, 2007.

Although not a railway museum, it does have an electric tramway, trolleybuses, a canal basin and narrowboat trips into the Dudley Tunnel and underground limestone mines. So, there's plenty there to interest the transport enthusiast.

2007/02/18.12 The oldest part of the Dudley Canal Tunnel is the Lord Ward's Tunnel opened in 1779. This was built to give access to the underground limestone mines. The limestone could then be loaded directly into the boats and brought out without further transhipment. 18th February, 2007

2007/02/18.13 Mining the limestone created enormous underground caverns. One of these was opened out to form Castle Mill Basin. The original 1779 tunnel to further mines, and subsequently extended to form a through route, is on the right. The left hand tunnel was driven by the present day Dudley Canal Trust some 200 years later in 1979 to by-pass a branch tunnel that was closed because of its dangerous condition. 18th February, 2007

2007/02/18.15 The trip boats follow a circular route through some of the underground caverns created by the extraction of the limestone. They then rejoin the main line of the Dudley Tunnel via another new tunnel, built in 1984, at Hurst's Cavern. Here there is a small tableaux representing the mining activities of two hundred years ago. 18th February, 2007

2007/02/18.16 The original tunnel into the limestone mines formed an underground junction with the main tunnel at Cathedral Arch. This was so called because of the style of the brickwork. This tunnel is now closed on safety grounds. 18th February, 2007

2007/02/18.18 As there were no towpaths through the Dudley Tunnel, boats were 'legged' through by men 'walking' along the tunnel sides or by lying on the top of the cargo and 'walking' along the tunnel roof. Passengers are given the opportunity to have a go at legging if they so wish. Although encouraged, it is not obligatory! 18th February, 2007
