1961/08.01 This is the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway platform at Barnstaple Town station. Although a bit overgrown, it is clear where the narrow gauge tracks had been despite being closed in 1935. The standard gauge trains on the line to Ilfracombe called at the opposing platform face. August, 1961 1023x668 R675__Barnstaple__August__1961.jpg 2006-10-23 00:14:00 |

1961/08.03 This is the halt at Snapper, some two miles from Barnstaple where this coach was still intact. I understand from Keith V that it is coach No. 1, a saloon/brake, but truncated by the time I saw it. Does it still exist, can anyone tell me? August, 1961. I understand that This coach (half!) was destroyed by fire at least 20 years ago. I think some of the door fittings had been removed prior to that. 1023x630 R677__LBR_coach_Snapper_Aug1961.jpg 2006-10-23 00:17:00 |
1961/08.04 Coach No.15 had also been at Snapper, but, about a year beforehand, this had been purchased by the Festiniog Railway and removed to North Wales where it subsequently became buffet car No. 14. The London Area Group of the Festiniog Railway Society was involved in the dismantling and removal of this vehicle and a sign on the platelayer's hut still proclaimed it to be the F. R. Co. Mess Room! August, 1961 1024x725 R678__LAG_messroom__Snapper__August__1961.jpg 2006-10-23 00:17:00 |
1961/08.05 Chelfham Viaduct was fenced off, so it was necessary to abandon the trackbed and walk down into the valley, rejoining the course of the railway further along. August, 1961 1024x697 R679__Chelfham_Viaduct__August__1961.jpg 2006-10-23 00:19:00 |

1961/08.07 This, and the next six pictures, show annonymous sections of the Lynton and Barnstaple trackbed. I am hoping that those more expert on matters L & B than I will be able to identify at least some of them. August, 1961. 2006/09/16.33 Under a wide open North Devon sky, a train for Woody Bay leaves the newly built (temporary?) terminus at Killington Lane. The original cutting at this point is to the right of the picture, but was filled in many years ago so major excavations are required here before trains can get under the road and proceed further towards Parracombe. 16th September, 2006 1024x653 RD1174__Dep_from_Killington_Lane.JPG 2006-09-16 14:23:00 |
2006/09/18.01 The lane from the village to Parracombe Halt continues past the station and then swings sharply to the right and goes over the line on this bridge. The 'line' is now the garden of the bungalow that occupies the station site and trackbed. 18th September, 2006 1024x768 RD1177__Overbridge_at_Parracombe.JPG 2006-09-18 15:36:00 |
2006/09/18.02 There's not much at Parracombe to indicate that it was once a Halt on the L & B, but this Southern Railway concrete waiting shelter gives a clue. A bungalow occupies the station site and trackbed and a chimney can be seen behind the shelter. In the distance, the overbridge can just be seen. 18th September, 2006 1024x768 RD1178__Southern_waiting_shelter__Parracombe.JPG 2006-09-18 15:38:00 |
2006/09/18.03 Caffyns Halt used to be down there! Will two foot gauge trains ever steam round that curve again, I wonder? Looking towards Woody Bay and Barnstaple, 18th September, 2006 1024x768 RD1185__Caffyns.JPG 2006-09-18 16:58:00 |
2006/09/18.04 The lane which crossed the railway at Caffyns went up and over this hump back bridge. Nowadays, it crosses the course of the railway at the same level. Looking towards Lynton, 18th September, 2006 1024x768 RD1186__Overbridge_at_Caffyns_-_1.JPG 2006-09-18 17:00:00 |
